Gisborne will be well represented at the North Island Rowing Championships this weekend, with 36 Gisborne Rowing Club members competing.

Racing started yesterday with age-group racing heats, while today the club category racing started. Categories are based on experience and results and range from novice to senior divisions.

Tomorrow the finals of the age-group racing will be held, and the regatta concludes on Monday with the club category finals.

Club president Peter Simmons, speaking from Karapiro, said the club had a strong start, with several teams through to tomorrow's A-finals.

He said the club had sent similar crews to those that had a successful end to 2020 at the Christmas Regatta, where they earned 20 medals, including 14 golds.

“They're in contention to do well, and we hope they'll medal for us again at this regatta.”

Simmons said some of the older rowers were using this regatta as a gauge for whether they should compete at the national club champs next month.

“The senior boys are mostly the school-aged boys who have just graduated and missed out on their last big regatta with Maadi Cup being cancelled last year.”

Simmons said he couldn't recall the last time the rowing club had sent a team to the nationals, which will be held in Twizel this year.
