SURF lifesavers from the three Gisborne clubs have been training together as a squad, vying for places in BDO Gisborne/Tairawhiti representative teams.
Athletes from the Midway, Waikanae and Wainui surf lifesaving clubs are out to impress selectors Dion Williams, Cory Hutchings, Matt Sutton and Carl Newman.
Selectors will pick theteams following the Eastland Port 2018 Champion of the Bays event at Midway Beach on January 13 and 14.
Those chosen will compete against teams from seven other regions at the Surf Life Saving New Zealand Representative Challenge.
Williams says the selectors’ strategy is to develop the district’s young athletes and provide them with a pathway into high-performance sport and give them an opportunity to compete against the best.
With the likes of Junior Black Fins athlete Olivia Corrin — who recently competed at the International Surf Rescue Challenge — vying for team places, competition at Midway on January 13 and 14 should be keen.
