GISBORNE teenagers Olivia Corrin and Matt Scott signalled their summer intentions with winning performances at the Whangamata Classic carnival over the weekend.
Corrin won the board race in the open and under-16 women’s divisions and was first in the u16 women’s surf race. Fellow Surf Lifesaving NZ high performance squadmember Scott won the open and u19 men’s surf races.
Another Midway club member, Connor O’Loughlin, was third in the open men’s beach flags and sprint.
Nearly 600 athletes took part in the carnival, jointly hosted by the Surf Life Saving northern and eastern regions. Mount Maunganui was top club overall on 52 points, five ahead of Piha.
The early form of Corrin and Scott indicates they are preparing well for the season, which culminates with the New Zealand championships at Whakatane in March.
