Corinn and Scott win at Eastern Region Senior Championships

YOUTH was to the fore in Gisborne surf lifesaving clubs’ campaigns at the Eastern Region Senior Championships at Mt Maunganui on Saturday and Sunday.

Midway duo Olivia Corrin and Matt Scott had comparable double success at age-group level in helping their club to 10th place.

Corrin won the u16 women’s run-swim-run and diamond lady, and in the open ranks finished second in the board race.

Scott won the u19 men’s run-swim-run and ironman.

For equal fourth-placed Waikanae (who were second-placed Eastern Region club), Casie Fyall won the under-19 women’s beach flags and was second in the open women’s division of the same event, while Emma Godwin won the u19 women’s run-swim-run.

Dods second for WaikanaeAlso racing for Waikanae, Harry Dods was second in the u19 men’s beach flags; the u19 men’s and women’s canoe crews, and the open women’s canoe crew, were all second; and the u19 men’s ski relay team (Quaid Thompson/Alex Bristow/Zach Ferkins) were third.

Wainui finished in 23rd-equal place but in Jacques Klavs they had the winner of the u19 men’s two-kilometre beach run.

Former Wainui surf lifesaver Oliver Puddick, now with Mt Maunganui, won the open men’s ski race, and was in the winning open men’s taplin team and the second-placed ski relay team.

Mt Maunganui were overall winners of the regionals, on 178 points. Mairangi Bay were second, on 71, and Piha were third, on 62. Waikanae and Red Beach both had 52 points.

Midway had 31 points and Wainui, six.
