Goal attack Jayda Banks had a strong game. She moved quickly around the goal third and collected different types of passes in the attacking zone — hard and flat, in and out, shooter-to -shooter and the high lob — while driving into the circle or skirting along the back line.
Midcourters Ata Mangu, Te Awa Clendon and Grace Tahuri played their part by surging to the top of the goal circle, positioning themselves well and linking with the shooters.
Horouta Koura made changes but struggled against YMP’s intense pressure throughout the court where they created many turnovers and capitalised on them.
Nothing separated Whangara and Girls’ High in the first quarter. Both teams moved the ball through the court well and put pressure on defences to go into the break locked 14-all.
Whangara came out focused for the second quarter, scoring the first three goals and gradually pulling ahead.
Centre Taryn Walford led her team well by driving to the ball, connecting both ends and supplying the shooters with quality ball.
Shooters Tiara Weir and Hinewaipounamu Rangihuna worked confidently in the goal circle by positioning themselves to collect the ball and using the shooter-to-shooter pass wisely.
Both teams excited their supporters with some impressive intercepts throughout the game.
Girls’ High made changes and even though they scored the same number of goals as Whangara, the damage was done in the second and third stanzas.
