New president Jon Davies welcomed members to the new season with a rousing speech. This was followed by a short address in a similar vein from new Gisborne-East Coast Centre president Mark Bain.
The club’s newest life member, Dawne Abraham, delivered the traditional first bowl of the season and what a beauty it was. Uncharacteristically for this event, it was just about a toucher.
The season was under way and, soon after, play began.
Progressive triples is one of the most social and enjoyable ways to play bowls. After each game, teams are re-formed into new teams, which introduces new members to the regulars and gives everyone the opportunity to catch up with one another.
The happy interaction on the green continued after play into the clubhouse where pizzas and nibbles were served as organisers worked out who were the day’s winners.
Prize-winners were —
Leads: Trish Leach 1, Chris Valentine 2, Robyn Arthur 3.
Directors: Margaret Rosacker 1, Joy Davis 2, Dave Hooper 3.
Skips: Jan Powell 1, Lex Kennedy 2, Val McGreevy 3.
Anyone interested in taking up this great game or becoming a member is welcome to join members on club days, which are Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Dress is mufti. Either ring 867 2398 or arrive before 1.15pm, and you’ll get a great reception and a roll-up.
We look forward to a happy and successful season with a full and varied programme intended to suit all ages and experience.
Gisborne
IT’S called the game for all ages and a teenager and a nonagenarian showed why when they got the lawn bowls season rolling on Saturday.
Angela Gibson-Sam, 14, sent down the jack and Bruce Smart, 94, the first bowl at Gisborne Bowling Club’s opening day.
Angela is the club’s youngest female member and past-president Bruce, the oldest. They were just two of a 48-strong field that turned out for the LJ Hooker-sponsored triples tournament.
Only one point separated the two teams that carved up the field with three wins apiece.
David Beattie (skip), Hugh Mackenzie and Steve Ward got their hands on the Gear Meat Salver with three wins, 16 ends won and a points differential of plus 13.
Life member Graham Reeve (s), Harry Jackson and Reg Hart, with three wins, 16 ends and a differential of plus 12, were a close second.
Fourteen ends won were enough for Steve Goldsbury (s), Lorna Reeve and Peter Gledhill to grab third place from a host of other trios who had two wins.
Alex Allen Triples
ENTRIES are being taken at the three city clubs for the first of Gisborne’s 2018-19 open tournaments.
The Kiri Te Kanawa Village-sponsored Alex Allen Triples will be played this Saturday, starting at 12.30pm. Entries close at 4pm tomorrow.
Coming up
HANDICAPS and the entry form for the club-only handicap singles are up at the clubhouse. This year the singles will be played as a one-day round-robin event on Saturday, September 15, starting at 9am.
Poverty Bay
What a splendid start to the season!
Poverty Bay Bowling Club’s opening day format was a mixed triples progressive tournament sponsored by Star Service Centre.
There were three games, each lasting one and a half hours.
This popular format attracted 45 members who were keen to get the new season under way after a lengthy lay-off over the winter months.
The first day of spring did us proud and members enjoyed balmy conditions as they eased themselves back into tournament mode.
