GisborneWith a new scoring system in play, a third of the 60-strong field shared in the prize money when the Gisborne Bowling Club hosted the annual Alex Allan Triples on Saturday.

It was the biggest turnout for a single-entry tournament seen in Gisborne for many years.

For the first time, ends won were included in a team’s total score rather than used merely as a method of breaking ties.

Prizes were paid out to the winners of each of the three rounds and to the top four teams overall. However, no team was allowed to collect twice.

Competition was fierce from start to finish as all players knew that even if they lost in the first two rounds they could save their day in the third.

The overall winners, Val McGreevy (skip), Joy Davis and Janet Willson, picked up the Alex Allan Memorial Shield for their consistent effort.

Arthur Hawes (s), Barbara Gibson and Kym Brown were second followed by Jeff Davis (s), Ted Mehrtens and Norma Miller. Charlie Ure (s), Bruce Gledhill and Mike Donnelly were fourth.

Round 1 winners were Jan Powell (s), Marion Jones and Trish Leach. Round 2 went to Dan Barr (s), Larry Kaloucava and Libby Clay and Round 3 to Rod Young (s), Jennie Evans and Andrew Ball.

Pip Griffin was on hand to present the prizes on behalf of the sponsor, Ryman Healthcare’s Kiri Te Kanawa Village.

Trafford’s Winter Trophy

Rain-forced interruptions meant the eight-round winter aggregate series for the Trafford’s Winter Trophy had to be cut to seven rounds and extended into the new season.

But despite the late-winter/early-spring weather surprises, 50 players took part in the series.

Peter Clay, who is just going into his second bowling season, got away to an early lead in the competition and held on last week to win. Arthur Hawes was second, Tim Sherriff third and Maurice Allan fourth.

Coming up

The single-entry Doug Neilson Triples is the club’s next open tournament, on Wednesday, September 25.

Entries close at 4pm the day before at all three city clubs.

Entries are also open for the club-only Handicap Singles on Saturday, September 28.

Handicaps will be posted at the club this week.
