Members of the Poverty Bay Bowling Club held their opening day tournament on Saturday in good bowling conditions.

The first bowl for the season was bowled by Bruce Smart, aka Smarty, and that he is, still playing a good game at 96.

The club celebrates its centenary next year so Bruce has been around nearly as long as the club.

Over 40 players competed in three games of progressive bowls during the Star Service Centre-sponsored opening day.

The competition gave new players an opportunity to get to know club members.

For the leads, Dusty Miller won first prize and John Leahy, second.

For directors, Ann Richardson was first and Tony Dobson, second.

The winning skip was Diane Christie by a narrow margin from Kathy Carroll.

It was great to see some players win prizes for the first time. John Leahy and Ann Richardson, well done to you both.

At the conclusion of play, members enjoyed socialising over a drink and pizzas.
