NETBALL by Murray Robertson

THE senior netball finals on Saturday produced some very close results on the Victoria Domain courts, with the eight-goal winning margin to High School Old Girls in the premier final, won 53-45 against Whangara Old Girls, the largest of the day.

“Overall it was a great end to a competitive netball season,” commentator Sherrill Beale said.

As well as the Jan Duncan Memorial Trophy, Taste One HSOG won the Maori Women’s Welfare League Cup for highest goal average in the premier grade of the Pak’nSave competition.

Whangara Old Girls won the Jan Duncan Trophy for runners up.

Third placed premier team YMP Sunshine Brewery won the Bess Logan Memorial Cup for the lowest goal average in premier grade.

HSOG won three of the grade titles decided on Saturday.

In A Grade, IMS HSOG Masters regained the Stoneham Cup 24-23 over Claydens Waikohu Masters.

Waikohu Masters took home the Shirley Smith Cup for runners up, and the Ruapani Cup for lowest goal average in A and A Reserve Grade.

In A Reserve YMP Masters beat Whalis 33-31 to win the Pat Tamatea Cup; Whalis picked up the Toni Leach Cup.

YMP Masters also took home the GNC Millennium Cup for Highest Goal Average in A and A Reserve Grade.

High School Old Girls picked up their third grade title in 1st Grade when Gisborne Denture Clinic HSOG nudged Gisborne Glass Ngatapa 25-24 to win the Tait Family Cup.

Ngatapa received the PB Umpires Cup.

In First Reserve, honours went to Whatatutu 26-24 over Uawa Ngarangikahiwa, and the winners received the Umpires 50th Jubilee Cup, Uawa Ngarangikahiwa the Irving Cup.

Whatatutu also received the award for the highest goal average in other grades below A Reserve.

In second grade, Sportsfit Magnolias won the PB Teachers Cup in beating Uawa Iranui 25-21. Uawa won the Sally Walters Cup.

Other awards —Uawa Club: Tattersall & Bayly Cup for the best presented team.

Thistle Storm: Basketball Cup for the most improved team.

Challise Rutene: Miriam Swarbrick Cup for dedication to netball.

Sherrill Beale: Efficiency Cup for commitment to netball.

Annette Kingi: Umpire of the Year, and most improved senior umpire.

Kate Faulks: Most improved junior umpire; Kez Hickey: Most dedicated umpire; Tessa Campbell and Kat Hollis: Highest theory mark; Kellann Kemp: junior-secondary umpire of the year.See also page 27
