Gisborne-Mahia surfer Ricardo Christie faced a tough route to book a slot at the Olympic Games through the ISA World Surfing Games.
Christie and fellow Kiwi Kehu Butler, of Mount Maunganui, dropped into the repechage rounds of the men’s competition of the ISA Games at Miyazaki, Japan yesterday.
It meant
they faced three further rounds to advance inside the top 30.
The news was better for Raglan’s Billy Stairmand, who advanced to the third round and has a great chance of claiming the Oceania slot for the Tokyo Games.
In small waves and hot, humid conditions, Christie finished fourth in his round 2 heat with a score of 9.33 out of 20 for his two best waves.
