Both winning teams went through the tournament unbeaten when Poverty Bay Bowling Club members held their championship open fours.

Jan Powell (skip), Lesley Seymour (director), Joy Davis (two) and Erin Sutherland (lead) won the women's competition, while Steve Berezowski (s), George Vaotuua (d), Steve Jenkins (2) and Les Whittington (l) won the men's.

Play was held in fine weather with a two-life format. Games lasted 15 ends or one hour 45 minutes.

In the women’s competition, Kathryn Flaugere (s), Kathy Carroll (d), Ellen Valentine (2) and Helen Hunt (l) had a one-point, first-round win against Dawne Abraham (s), Ngawai Turipa (d), Win Baker (2) and Jenny Amor (l)

. . . 12-11. They were then on the other side of the same margin, when they were beaten 11-10 in the third round by Anita Vaotuua (s), Jessie Davis-Law (d), Cheryl Jenkins (2) and Anna Colvin (l).

In the final, Powell's team got off to a great start. They won the first six ends and then held off a fightback by Vaotuua’s team to win 20-12.

The men's competition also had some close games.

In the first round, Berezowski's team had a 13-12 victory over Barrie Denham (s), Ron Seabrook (d), Bruce Gledhill (2) and Chris Valentine (l). In the second round, Berezowski's team had another close game — a 12-11 win against new club member Marc Alexander (s), Stephen Phillips (d), Brendan Reavey (2) and Scott Amor (l).

In the men's final, Berezowski's team had a comfortable win against John Andrew (s), Bruce Ball (d), Robin Jefferson (2) and Jack Clark (l).

In the first three rounds, Bruce Ball skipped this team. They had good wins against the teams skipped by Denham and Alexander to make the final.

All in all, it was a great day of championship bowls with outstanding competition.
