SURF LIFESAVING

WAIKANAE club lifeguard Casie Fyall led the New Zealand surf lifesaving team to a hard-fought second placing in the international Sanyo Cup event in Japan last weekend.

The 22-year-old was the lead beach exponent in the team and led by example with wins in a range of events across the two days.

“It was an honour again to represent New Zealand at the Sanyo Cup and to be chosen as the captain to lead an amazing bunch of athletes,” Fyall said.

The competing teams were New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, South Africa and Spain.

“Although our aim was to try to win the trophy we were unfortunate to come second to Australia.”

On Day 1, Fyall won the beach sprint, was part of the winning tube rescue team, part of the winning beach relay team and was third in the beach flags.

On Day 2, she did the double, winning both the sprint and flags.

“I was pleased with my results for the two days, but the highlight for me was winning the double on the final day,” she said.

“For some of the Kiwi athletes it was their first time representing their country.

“They did their country proud with some standout performances.”

It was her fourth year competing at the Sanyo Cup.

“I always look forward to meeting and competing against the competitors from other countries. Some of us have become great friends.

“Japan has always made us feel welcome and allowed us an opportunity to embrace their amazing culture.

“Finally, a huge shout-out to our coaches and managers and to all the families who travelled to Japan for the event.

“Thanks so much for your support and encouragement.”
