Māhia Golf Club said good riddance to a tough 2023 with a brilliant start to 2024 yesterday.

A field of 120 members from various clubs, alongside holidaymakers, competed in Mahia’s Bayleys-sponsored New Year’s tournament.

Māhia was named among the world’s top 50 courses in 2020 but last year suffered severe flooding from which it took several months to recover.

The effects are still there but the course was in top-notch condition yesterday and some of the scoring complemented that.

Home-course players, perhaps predictably, featured prominently at the top end of the prizes.

Long-time member Roger Bremner was the best of the men, combining matching nines of 42 in his 84-19-65 to win the stableford with 42 points.

He was one point ahead of clubmate and greenkeeper Bernie Crowley, with Napier’s Kaden Diehl third on 40.

Patutahi’s Kim Torrez won the women’s stableford with 108-40-68, for 42 points. Māhia’s Lee Steel was second on 38 and another ’Tahi player, Charlie Holland, was third on 37.
