Jonathan Purcell took 6-38 against Waikato Valley yesterday.
SAM Singh’s policy of batting down the order paid off for the second week in a row when he scored 74 and shared a 120-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Gagan Dhingra (43 not out). Singh, a right-handed batsman who also opens the bowling, batted at No.6 against OBR.
He went in at No.8 last week and steered his side to a thrilling win against Tamarind High School Old Boys, when he scored an unbeaten 111.
Singh, who makes the journey from Auckland by car each week to play for the Stars, said he would love to live in Gisborne.
“I had to leave Gisborne to look for a job in Auckland, but I really love Gisborne and playing for the Stars, which is why I come back,” he said.
Singh shares the captaincy with all-rounder Gary Singh and wicketkeeper-cum-right-arm medium-pace bowler Ajay Kumar (who took 6-24 against HSOB).
“We decided to share the captaincy around and we’ll probably have a different captain this week,” said Gary Singh, whose side play Campion College.
