Gisborne Bohemians have long been at the bottom of the table but have continued to improve phenomenally in the women’s football league this season. They lost 3-2 to Campion College on Sunday but it did not feel like it, Bohs player Tami Gooch said.

“We’re not winning games as such but we feel like we are not losing them either.”

Many of the Bohs players had never touched a football before the season started, she said.

“They have come a long way and are making great gains. We are not getting thrashed, which is great.”

Both Bohs goals came from Jade Moore — one from a cross tapped into the net. Lisa Moore and Amanda Smith also played well.

“There were some great plays and passing,” Gooch said. “The girls were really pleased with the game.”

Denby Gallagher (2) and Brooke Bennett scored for Campion. Campion coach Carl Bennett said the game was a “tight tussle”.

“The girls played well. For us it was a real team commitment. There was a lot of passing. We’ve been struggling to put passes together and the girls did that well on Sunday.”

At Nelson Park, Tatapouri Marist beat Gisborne Girls’ High School 6-2. Emily Willock’s four goals included an impressive header. Chelsea Simpson and Kenzie Holmes also scored. Goalie Pip Thomson said Marist fielded one of their strongest teams this season and had so many subs they had to leave Kim-Maree Larby off the team card.

“Emily was just too strong for the Girls’ High defence and Britta Carroll ran hard all day,” she said. “And it was great to have Chelsea back after injury.”

Paula Jeune and Renee Holmes scored the Girls’ High goals.

Gisborne Laundry Services Thistle beat Lytton High School 10-0.

Amber Dunn and Tori Williams both scored hat-tricks. Kendyl Redd and Erin Sycamore scored a goal each, and Lytton contributed two own goals.
