A group of previously unknown players now living in Gisborne teamed up with badminton stalwart Ruth Ledger to win the BIZminton 2022 competition.

The inclusion of Ledger in their team meant that Mallu Boys met the condition that all teams include at least one male or one female player.

Sterin Mathew, Jibin Jacob, Jinesh Joseph and Jestin Thomas improved throughout the competition. The team just kept staying ahead of their opponents. They won all six of their ties, winning 31 matches, losing only four and drawing one in the five weeks.

Fruitworx (Thomas and William Garrett, Corey Lugtig, Leo Maggioni and Sacha Brownlie with reserves) were placed second, from Stanley Family and Ex U15. All three teams won four ties. Fruitworx were placed second on a countback of games difference, followed by Stanley Family and Ex U15.

Spot prizes were won by Anarnya Raeina, Alicia Armstrong, Omahia Harrington, Te Aomihia Walker, Andrew Long, Dane Berry, Corey Lugtig, Ron Clancy, Shane McGhie, Tom Anderson and Owen Vickers.

A presentation was made to Gayle Sutherland, a spectator, who weekly kept the time of the games and blew the whistle.
