Defending premier grade champions High School Old Girls made short work of Whangara Old Girls in the match of the day in senior netball at Victoria Domain on Saturday.

The other winners in PAK'nSAVE premier grade were Claydens Waikohu, YMP Sunshine Brewing and, in the first of their two games, Whangara.

“The weather wasn't ideal, but at least the rain eased enough for us to play games,” centre manager Allisa Hall said.

Taste One High School Old Girls led throughout in their match against Whangara, albeit by only three goals after the first 10 minutes.

They were up 24-10 at halftime, 33-18 at three-quartertime, and 42-26 at the end.

“It was a good result for us,” HSOG coach Tanya Owen said.

“But we are still trying to get our heads around playing outdoors, and for only 40 minutes.

“We are working hard to adapt to the new structure of the games, and still have work to do.”

She said the HSOG shooters stepped up in the match.

“Marcia Beale and Lisa Basford shot well, and we were good on defence, too, with our brand new defensive duo of Kelly Wood and Alex Sinclair.”

Whangara coach Ronnie Martin said that having only seven players available for both their games on Saturday made it tough.

“We needed a full team to take on High School Old Girls,” she said.

“They're a fit and structured team.

“We didn't help ourselves with too many errors, handing the ball back to them too many times.”

Whangara won their first match of the day, 36-26 against Horouta Gold.

Horouta were up 10-8 after the first period, but Whangara turned that around to lead 16-14 at halftime and 27-23 at three-quartertime.

Claydens Waikohu (1) recorded their second win of the competition, 41-22 against Ritana Senior A from Lytton High School.

They led throughout and were 25-13 ahead at halftime.

YMP Sunshine Brewing retained their unbeaten status, like HSOG, with a strong 27-17 victory over Gisborne Girls' High School Senior A.

It was tight for the first 10 minutes, YMP up by just a single goal, 7-6. But it was 12-8 at halftime and 22-13 at three-quartertime.
