GISBORNE teenager Tyler Finau has been in strong form at the national open swimming championships in North Shore.
The Enterprise Cars Swim Team member produced a four-second personal best in finishing fourth in the women’s 200 metres backstroke final on day one. At 15, she was the youngest in thefinal.
She clocked 2 minutes 18.66 seconds.
North Shore’s Ali Galyer threatened the national record in winning the final in 2:09.78, with former Gisborne swimmer Emma Godwin (now with the Heretaunga Sundevils) second.
Finau was also in finals action on day 2. She was sixth in the 400 metres individual medley and fourth New Zealander — overseas swimmers compete at the nationals but are ineligible for titles — in a time of 5:08.13. It was less than a second outside the Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay age group record.
Gisborne’s Chris Dawson, swimming for North Shore, was sixth (fourth New Zealander) in the men’s 50m butterfly final last night in 24.89. Bayley Main, of Pakuranga-Howick, won in 24.26.
Dawson was also in the North Shore men’s team who won the 400m medley relay by 0.20 secs from Capital.
