THE finale of the Gisborne Speedway Club season on Saturday night was sensational with a second night of great racing and a fireworks show to end the season.

Spectators at Eastland Group Raceway were wowed by a fireworks display that one fan described as “magnificent”.

“What an awesome couple of nights' racing,” club president Clyde McGrory said.

“We've had nothing but amazingly good feedback from all the superstock and stockcar drivers who came here.

“Some have even indicated that they want to join the club and race here full time next year, which is great.

“We could not have asked for a better finish to our 50th-anniversary season.”

McGrory said the superstocks were his highlight over the two nights.

“They were absolutely amazing, breaking track records, and the performance of Jamie Hamilton (9G) across both nights was just incredible.”

Hamilton won all three superstock races on Saturday night.

“Ethan Rees (127G) was also outstanding,” McGrory said.

“You just cannot say enough about how those two guys, in particular, performed.”

Rees was rapt to win the McCafferty Metal Cartage Superstock Champion of Champions title on Friday night.

“It felt awesome to win it,” he said.

“The car was awesome, and I managed to keep my nose clean, out of trouble.

“The whole superstock programme both nights was really good, and it was so good to have all the visiting drivers come here to support the club.”

His father Peter (10G) teamed up with Ross Ashby from Mt Maunganui (38M) to take out the McCafferty Metal Cartage Superstock Best Pairs.

The stockcars were also dynamic, to the point where they dubbed their final feature race “the final smash”, from which veteran Trevor McArthur (128G) emerged victorious.

Another stockie veteran, Bruce Harding, had to be helped from his car during that final race.

He was taken to hospital by St John ambulance for a check-up for possible concussion. He was discharged that night.

The TQs turned on blistering racing both nights with Duane Todd (6B), Dylan MacGregor (17G) and Ryan MacGregor (74G) always among the frontrunners.

The Mangapapa Garage Streetstocks Best Pairs title went to Cody Gooch (6G) and his paired partner Thomas McEwan (26B), and the Phil Walsh Memorial Production Cars Trophy was won by Seth McKay (48G).

McKay's win caps off a stellar season for him.

McGrory said the club wanted to thank its fans for their support.

“We've had an amazing season, and without their support we would not have had such a good one.”
