CRICKET

FIFTY-over cricket can be a grind.

Or to fall in line with the adage, a fast game’s a good game, as was the case with Poverty Bay in their match against Hamilton at the Northern Districts junior secondary schools tournament yesterday.

Hamilton beat the Bay by 10 wickets.

Poverty Bay captain Nathan Trowell won the toss at Kensington Oval and opted to bat.

Poverty Bay were bowled out for 70 in 24 overs. Wicketkeeper Jack Whitehead-McKay was their only scorer in double figures, with 10 from 34 balls; seven players had scores of four or less.

Hamilton openers Daniel Kibby (33) and Angus Reeves (30) saw their side home — 72-0 — in 10.4 overs.

Today Poverty Bay were to play Northland in the second of three 50-over games.
