POVERTY Bay started their Northern Districts senior secondary schools’ cricket tournament with two losses at Harry Barker Reserve yesterday.

After winning the toss and electing to bat first in their opening Twenty20 clash against Waikato Valley, the Bay were restricted to 91-9. Matt Cooper then led the charge with 42 as Valley reached their target for the loss of two wickets.

“That was a disappointing start,” Bay manager David McDonald said.

“The boys showed a lot of character to bounce back against Coastland in a game that went to the wire.

“Thorn Parkes and Robbie Tallott gave us a good start with an opening partnership of 82, then we lost some momentum, but 132 in Twenty20 is a good score. Jak Rowe batted well late in the innings for 22 not out.

“The game swung both ways during the Coastland innings before they got there in the 19th over.”

The Bay play Northern Districts Invitation today in a 50-over match.
