Barry’s new-style croquet tournament proves a hit

BARRY Memorial Croquet Club opened its doors to all for its latest tournament

The club encouranged non-members, visitors and new members to take part in the Handicap Golf Croquet competition.

Eight pairs — comprising a low handicap players alongside a less experienced one — each played seven games throughout the day.

The winners were Steph McGregor — a visitor from Hamilton who had only played a few times — and club member Rob Hayes.

They won six games and drew one.

McGregor played far better than her handicap and it was suggested afterwards that she would not be given such a generous handicap the next time she played here.

Runners-up were John Wilson and fellow member Richard Rice, who won four, lost two and drew one.

No- members Rick Thomson also visiting from Hamilton, and local Mike Ransley and new members Michael Dixon and Bryan Pulley thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Together with their more experienced partners they fought for their points and such was the closeness of many of the games that there were five draws during the day.

The concept was so successful the club intends organising another tournament later in the season.

Anyone interested in taking part should inquire at the Aberdeen Road club on Friday or Sunday afternoons.
