Ball and Berezowski ‘the masters’

BRUCE Ball and Steve Berezowski won the masters’ 60-and-over optional pairs tournament held at Poverty Bay Bowling Club’s greens last week.

The entry was only 12 teams, the hot weather possibly putting off some who might otherwise have entered.

To qualify for post-section play, combinations had to win two of three qualifying games. The rest of the field entered a consolation event.

In post-section play, Ball and Berezowski had a first-round win against Dave Hooper, while Wayne and Betty Herring of Ohope defeated Ronnie and Dennis Crone, and Lex Kennedy and Val McGreevy defeated Jeff and Joy Davis.

In the semifinals, Ball and Berezowski defeated Dayvinia and Trevor Mills, and the Herrings defeated Kennedy and McGreevy.

The final proved to be a close-run match, the result being in doubt till the end, when Berezowski trailed the kitty with his last bowl — the final bowl of the match — to secure a 14-12 win.

Both pairs had gone through the tournament unbeaten, so they were deserving finalists.

Well done to Poverty Bay president Ball and Berezowski, and commiserations to Ohope visitors Betty and Wayne Herring.

Joe Wimutu and Neville Wagner of Kahutia won the consolation, from Larry Kaloucava and Dawne Abraham of Poverty Bay.
