THE Logans Sporting Excellence Awards function will be a dual celebration this year.
It will recognise the 25th anniversary of the organisation now known as Sport Gisborne Tairawhiti, while acknowledging sporting success over the past year for athletes, teams, coaches, officials and volunteers. Nominations close at 5pm on Friday nextweek.
Sport Gisborne Tairawhiti chief executive Brent Sheldrake said the awards were not just about the premier categories of sportsman and woman of the year.
“The awards pay tribute to emerging and masters athletes, and all the people who work tirelessly behind the scenes to make sport happen in our community each and every week,” Sheldrake said.
Awards will be made in 10 categories, culminating in the naming of the overall sportsperson of the year. Categories are junior sportsman, woman and team; master (over-30) sportsperson; sportsman, woman and team; coach/official; club; and service to sport.
Logans general manager Matt Logan said the awards were a reminder of the talent and potential in the district.
“It’s been rewarding for Logans to support the achievements of others who set the standard in their field,” he said.
The awards cover performance and achievements from May 1, 2015, to April 30, 2016. Nomination forms are available at www.sportgisborne.org.nz/sports_awards_2016. The awards will be presented at the War Memorial Theatre on July 6.
