Poverty Bay
ENDS won and shot differential had to be taken into account to separate four teams who each had three wins in the McKenzie Shield Mixed Eight-point Triples last Wednesday.
Winners Steve Berezowski (skip), Marilyn Knowles and Barbara Gibson won 23 ends and had a differential of +22.
They edged into second place Queenie Takurua (skip), Adrienne Smiler and Ron Robertson, who also won 23 ends but had a differential of +14.
Ora Peipi (skip), Ngawai Turipa and Chris Valentine took third place.
Teams played four games of 10 ends or 90 minutes in the Village Butchery-sponsored tournament.
Fourteen teams entered. Of the 42 players, 13 were from the Gisborne Bowling Club.
The Village Butchery provided a meat tray as a raffle prize and vouchers for the winners.
THE experienced team of Ora Peipi (skip), Val McGreevy and June Stichbury won the Poverty Bay women’s open triples club championship at the weekend.
Teams played a two-life system, with preliminary games of 12 ends with a time limit of one hour 50 minutes. Semifinals and the final were of 12 ends, with no time limit.
Team Peipi were hard-pressed in the final by Lesley Holmes (skip), Ellen Valentine and Trish Leach.
Both teams had won convincingly in Round 1, each scoring a six-point end to seal their success.
In Round 2, Peipi took the first life from Holmes to gain a bye to the final.
Team Holmes had a tough match in Round 3, against Jan Powell (skip), Joy Davis and Kathy Carroll, with the winners going through to the final.
Team Powell led 8-6 on the last end but the final bowl delivered by Holmes gained three shots and gave her team a 9-8 win.
The final was close and exciting. After seven ends it was evenly balanced at 8-8, and after 10 ends the score had advanced to 10-10.
Team Peipi left their best play until the last two ends, scoring three shots and then six to put the title out of their opponents’ reach. It must be said that the final score did not reflect the pattern of play.
Ace campaigner Larry Kaloucava (skip) and young guns Luke Sanders and Jareth Gaskin won the men’s championship.
In Round 3, against Steve Berezowski (skip), Ian Carroll and Jeff Davis, Kaloucava led 9-0 but was pulled back to 11-10 with one end to play. A single shot on the last end gave Team Kaloucava the victory and a bye to the final.
Berezowski defeated Lex Kennedy (skip), Sel Gribble and Bruce Ball by a single shot in Round 4 to set up a showdown with Kaloucava in the final, to be played the next day.
Sunday dawned with weather similar to that enjoyed the previous day. Team Kaloucava began slowly, but on End 5 they scored an impressive six shots to lead 10-5. This was to prove decisive.
Despite a valiant effort by Team Berezowski, the accurate drawing of Sanders and Gaskin won each end thereafter. Team Kaloucava convincingly won the match 16-5 and, consequently, the championship.
Gisborne
FOURTEEN teams started when Gisborne Bowling Club held its mixed pairs championship at the weekend. Now there are three.
Jamey Ferris and Tanya Harrison were locked at 4-4 after five ends with Arthur and Carol Hawes in Round 6 when rain stopped play on Sunday afternoon.
In an earlier round, Ferris and Harrison, who still have two lives in the two-life system of play, took a life off the Hawes pair.
Waiting to meet Ferris in the next round are Ricky Miller and Barbara Gibson, who kept their title hopes alive by knocking out Robin Jefferson and Margo Willock in Round 5.
Should the Hawes pair beat Ferris and Harrison when their match resumes, they will have a bye into the next round.
The championship will be completed at a later date.
