Poverty Bay Bowling Club's open mixed pairs championship was held on February 15 and 16.

Eleven pairs competed on the Saturday, playing four rounds of 90 minutes or 15 ends.

The top eight teams — decided on game points, then ends won, then shots differential — went through to the second day of competition, which was run to a one-life system. The draw was based on seedings from the first day's competition.

In the semifinals Lex Kennedy (skip) and Val McGreevy defeated Marion Jones and Andrew Ball 21-6.

In the second semifinal, Marilyn Knowles (s) and Otto Louw had a close game with Ian Carroll and Diane Christie.

These pairs were within two points of each other throughout the game and after 14 ends it was 11-all.

On the last end, a great draw bowl by Marilyn clinched the game for her pair, 12-11.

Club members then watched a thrilling final between Lex and Val and Marilyn and Otto.

Val and Lex got off to a good start and were six points ahead before Marilyn and Otto started to score well and got ahead on the 10th end. Marilyn played a superb draw bowl to get two points and make the score 10-9.

She and Otto stayed ahead, Marilyn playing more good draw bowls, and the score was 14-10 after 14 ends.

The last end was tense. With his second bowl, Lex drove, hitting the kitty and putting both the kitty and his marked bowl into the ditch. He needed to get three more points with his last bowl to draw level.

Club members discussed the possibilities and they seemed near impossible but Lex managed to get two more points. That meant he and Val were runners-up, with the final score 14-13.

Over the weekend Marilyn and Otto played wonderful bowls and Otto, who has been playing for less than a year, has reason to feel proud of his progress.

Marilyn and Otto were presented with the Comber Trophy for senior pairs.

This was a women's trophy until the men's and women's sections of the club merged in 2007 and it was awarded to mixed teams.
