The club will trial Bowls New Zealand’s new iniative, Bowls3Five on Saturday, starting at 12.30pm. Entries close at 4pm tomorrow.
The format is two-bowl triples played in sets (think tennis) with one power play in each game. Three games are planned for the afternoon.
Entries are also being taken for the club’s first championships of the season, the mixed pairs, which are due to be played on October 6 and 7.
Poverty BayMarion Jones and Luke Sanders were the women’s and men’s winners respectively of Poverty Bay’s handicap singles mixed championship.
These comprised four games, each lasting 90 minutes or as long as it takes either player to reach 21 points.
This early-season championship attracted 24 players. Competition was in two sections, each of 12 players.
One section played on Saturday, the other on Sunday. Results from both days’ play were collated to find the winners.
Jones, playing on Saturday, was unbeaten in the four games played. This victory was also a successful defence of the title she won last year.
Sanders, playing on Sunday, was also unbeaten in his four games. He overcame three widely experienced players on his march to victory, an improvement on his second-place finish last year.
As handicapping is designed to create a level playing field allowing players of all skills and experience to compete against one another, it was good to see how many matches were finely balanced at the end.
Several matches required an extra end to decide the winner — a good indication of the handicapper’s skill and knowledge.
Jones’s fourth-game win against new bowler Andrew Ball confirmed her win and meant Ball was second in the men’s championship.
The very last match on Sunday between Sanders and Joy Davis was exciting to watch. The lead changed throughout, and the last delivery of the weekend gave Sanders victory by two shots.
With both players having won three games before the final match, this result meant Davis finished second in the women’s championship.

KahutiaSecond-year bowler Bruce Elliott, Anita Vaotuua and Vern Marshall won the Alfresco Motel Tournament, sponsored by Mick and Kath Maunder, at Kahutia on Saturday.
They were the only team to win four games, and had a differential of 24.
Runners-up were Don Oates, Gary Tocker and Murray Murton, with three wins, a differential of four, and 22 points.
Third were Richard Mann, Judy Taylor and Mick Maunder, with three wins, a differential of four and 18 points.
The competition format for the 42 players taking part was that two sets of five ends would be played, with an extra end if the sets were tied.
With a little rain in the morning, players managed to play all games without fuss. Most games were over in an hour, which kept everyone happy.
There were some great signs from bowlers this early in the season. A lot of the games had to go to an extra end, which made the tournament more interesting, especially for the spectators.
Eight team prizes were given, and a wonderful, sponsor-supplied spread was there for the players as they came off the greens after their fourth game. That capped off the day perfectly.
Thanks go to those from the Gisborne club and from Tolaga Bay who supported the tournament.
