George Vaotuua and Paige Richter will represent Kahutia Bowling Club in the Gisborne-East Coast centre's champion of champions mixed pairs in May.

They beat siblings Lucy and Leighton Shanks 16-11 in the final this month.

The club's mixed pairs tournament had taken place on October 10 and 11. However, in the sixth round, the two-lifer Shanks siblings lost to Vaotuua and Richter by one on the 18th end. This meant the two pairs had to play off.

The mixed pairs final was played on Sunday, November 1, following the final of the championship fours. Both pairs had one life remaining.

The Shanks pair got off to a cracking start, scoring on the first five ends to go 7-0 up.

The next four ends belonged to the Vaotuua pair and on the ninth end they were only one point behind.

The Shanks pair scored one point on each of the next three ends to take a 10-6 lead on the 12th end.

However, Vaotuua and Richter got their mojo going to wrap up the game at 16-11 on the 18th end. They will play in the centre's champion of champions mixed pairs on May 1 and 2.
