Boon McIlroy and Diane Phillips produced a top display of lawn bowls to take out the senior mixed pairs at Gisborne Bowling Club.

They played with accuracy and skill to keep both lives intact.

Finishing in distant equal-second placing were Charlie Ure and Lesley MacIntosh, George Tamihana and Margot Willock, Tim and Ginny Sherriff, Jeff Davis and Kym Brown, and Steve and Kay Goldsbury.

Mike Donnelly and Ann Ward won the junior section. Mike showed great skill, and coaxed Ann to play some excellent lead bowls to set up the win.

Runners-up were Nanette Treloar and Frank Findson, Peter and Libby Clay, and George Stanley and Joy McFarlane.

The rain came at the end of the first game on Saturday. Flooded greens stopped play and it was a case of “come back tomorrow”.

The 10 teams taking part welcomed the blustery but fine day to finish off what is usually one of the more popular events on the calendar.

Congratulations to all on a fine display of early-season bowls.

It was great to see new junior players competing in their first club championships when Poverty Bay Bowling Club’s junior championship pairs were held at the weekend.

Win Baker and Joan Gledhill won a very exciting women’s final 13-12.

Runners-up Olivia Scott and Katie Blackburn pushed them to the end. Blackburn is a new bowler, and played very well in what was her first tournament.

The men’s junior championship final was won by John Andrews and Jack Clark.

The runners-up were BJ Seymour and Scott Amor.

These two pairs played each other twice.

The third round was close, Andrews and Clark winning 12-11.
