Anna Colvin, a third-year player, played well to defeat Anita Vaotuua in the second round, 22-13.
Olivia Scott, a first-year player, had a great day. She lost her first-round game to Davis then defeated Ngawai Turipa 17-16 in a thrilling second-round game. In the third round, Scott and Colvin had another of the championship thrillers as only one or two shots separated them in the last eight ends. Scott eventually won 16-15.
Scott lost her second life to Flaugere in the semifinals.
The men's open singles championship was won by second-year player Gerry Kora, who also won with two lives intact.
In a close final, he defeated Les Whittington, another junior player, 21-18. They also played each other in the 4th round, when Kora won 13-11 in another exciting game.
He defeated some very experienced players during the competition. In the second round he defeated Steve Berezowski 21-12.
In the fifth round, Kora and 87-year-old Ron Seabrook had a superb game. Kora won it 15-13.
Two other junior men, John Andrews and BJ Seymour, had some wins and good, close games against senior players. It is good for the club to have junior players competing so well.
Kahutia Bowling Club members held their championship singles events last weekend and keen competition ensued.
