Poverty Bay Bowling Club's open mixed triples championship was won by the team of Lex Kennedy (skip), Val McGreevy (director) and Lesley Seymour (lead).

They defeated Barrie Denham (s), Marilyn Knowles (d) and Ngawai Turipa (l) 13-8 in the final.

This reversed the result of an earlier game in the competition, when Denham's team beat Kennedy's, 11-10.

The championship was played under great twilight conditions, and finished with the lights on.

A two-life system was used and games were of 12 ends or one-and-three-quarter hours.

The championship got off to a great start. Scores were level before the last end in two of the four games, and a third — Denham's victory over Kennedy — was very close.

The semifinal between Denham's team and Dave Hooper (s), Norma Miller (d) and Dusty Miller (l) was level at 10-10 after 10 ends with Denham's team winning by 1 point on the last end.

Denham's team had been ahead 10-2 until Hooper's team won four ends in a row to level the score.

Hooper and Dusty Miller played great bowls, particularly in the third round when their team defeated Bruce Ball (s), Diane Christie (d) and Andrew Ball (l).

Hooper's team were down 8-3 before they won four ends to lead 9-8. After 11 ends the score was 9-9 and Ball's team had four bowls nearest the jack. With his last bowl, Hooper played an exceptional bowl to take the game and get his team into the semifinals.
