Andrew Ball won the Poverty Bay Bowling Club men's junior singles championship for players with up to eight years of bowls experience.

Ball defeated Dusty Miller 22-15 in the final, which club members watched with interest.

This result was not unexpected as Ball plays regularly and consistently. Runner-up Miller may have surprised some, however.

He was able to play because the championships were held in the evening midweek. The two games he won on his way to the final included a 20-14 victory over Dawson Owen.

Otto Louw won the club men's junior singles championship for players with up to three years of bowls experience. Only two junior men were eligible for this competition. Louw had two good wins against John Andrews.

Both the junior women's singles championships have yet to be completed as they had more entries.

A fun afternoon for 10 teams of bowlers took place at Kahutia Bowling Club last Wednesday.

The popular Bowls 3 Five format was used.

Pip Griffin, representing sponsor Kiri Te Kanawa Retirement Village, gave the successful teams their prizes.

In first place were Jeff Davis (skip), Ray Young (two), Adrienne Torrie (lead).

Second were the pairing of Murray Owen (s) and Alic Brown.

Third place went to Bruce Ball (s), Marie Thomas (two) and Karen Pinn (lead).

It has been a busy few months for Jamey Ferris keeping the immaculate greens at the Gisborne Club in tip-top condition during Covid and practising his bowls for the various competitions which seem to crop up most weekends.

He will be pleased to add the 2020 men's singles championship to his list of achievements.

Facing an in-form Robin Jefferson, who had two lives, Ferris had to win the potential final.

The players were neck and neck until the last few ends. Ferris came up with some superb shots and suddenly he was ahead. He won 21-15 and the next game became a winner-take-all affair.

Jefferson failed to fire in the final, while Ferris went from strength to strength with some outstanding bowls to take out the championship 21-6.

The other final played at the weekend was for the junior men's fours title. It took three games to decide the eventual winners. Harry Jackson skipped Steve Ward, Don Oates and Peter Clay to victory over Geoff Pinn (skip), Peter Gledhill, Liam and Kyle Pinn.
