POVERTY BAY

Poverty Bay Bowling Club members competed in a closing day rotational triples tournament as a farewell to their cyclone-damaged artificial turf.

In rotational triples, players all have a turn in each position — skip, director and lead. Two teams had four players.

Players accepted the additional challenges of the old green. There were some hilarious moments when a well-aimed bowl hit bumps and went the wrong way or unbelievably jumped several inches into the air.  Despite this, it was a fun tournament of three one-hour games.

In first place were Jan Powell, Dave Hooper and Tony Dobson, who had two wins and a draw, won 13 ends and had a differential of 19 shots.

Second were Peter Walters,  Bruce Gledhill and Marion Jones, who also had two wins and a draw, and won 13 ends. But they had a smaller differential — nine shots.

The teams in third and fourth places both had two wins.

Third were Jon Davies, Lesley Holmes, Mike Donnelly and Craig Smith, who won 15 ends.

Fourth were Di Christie, Robin Jefferson and Ellen Valentine, who won 11 ends.

The club appreciates the sponsorship of the Beetham Lifestyle Village.

Club members shared delicious food after the tournament, and the 2022-23 season prize-giving followed.

A big thank-you goes to Jan Powell and her helpers for organising the engraving of the trophies, and to club president Peter Walters, who presented them.

The Poverty Bay Bowling Club is optimistic the new artificial turf will be installed before the new bowling season begins in August.
