Six rinks of tough players battled the heat following a wet morning to play triples at Gisborne Bowling Club for the Hilton Croskery Trophy.

It was all hands to the pump as grounds that were under water in the morning were made playable for the 36 bowlers in the Gisborne Glass-sponsored event.

With the No.1 green out of action, dedicated volunteers have worked to enable large numbers of players to enjoy a summer of bowls at the Gisborne club. The pressure will soon be off when the No.1 green is available again.

Winners of the trophy were: Graham Moore (skip), Bruce Ball and Diane Doyle, with three wins and 33 points.

Second were Carol Hawes (skip), Rex Richardson and Hugh Trafford, with three wins and 30 points.

Third were Arthur Hawes, Tim Sherriff and Joy McFarlane, with three wins and 13 points.

Fourth were Harry Jackson (skip), Marion Jones and Tony Dobson, with three wins and 11 points.

The second of Poverty Bay Bowling Club's Twilight Triples competitions was held last Thursday.

Six teams of triples and two of pairs competed in the Star Service Centre-sponsored event.

Four teams had two wins so ends and differentials decided the placings. Kathryn Flaugere (skip), Ron Seabrook (director) and Jude Hall (lead) were the winners with nine ends and a differential of 13.

Second place went to Erin Sutherland (s), Norma Miller (d) and June Kinder (l) with nine ends and a differential of 12.

Third placed were Kim Walters (s) and John Andrews with seven ends.

The final night in the series starts at 5.30pm on Thursday next week.

Winners of the club mixed triples championship were junior players Les Whittington (s), John Andrews (d) and Win Baker (l). Four games of 12 ends or 105 minutes were played in good conditions. Six teams had three wins but the winning team had three wins and a draw.
