Unbeaten winners of Gisborne Bowling Club's women's open triples were (from left) skip Carol Hawes, Dayvinia Mills and Lesley McIntosh.

Unbeaten winners of Gisborne Bowling Club's women's open triples were (from left) skip Carol Hawes, Dayvinia Mills and Lesley McIntosh.

Last Thursday, the club held a single-entry bowls tournament on a 3/5 format. Two games were played — enough for the heat of the afternoon.

Murray Murton skipped the winning team, with Marie Thomas at two and Graham Atkins the lead. They had two wins, with 12 ends won and 36 shots for.

Second place went to Murray Owen (skip), Allan Parker (two) and Pat Bayley (lead) with a loss and a win, 14 ends won and 18 shots for.

Third were Ray Taylor (skip), Pat Murton (two) and Kingi Stevens (lead) with a win and a loss, 13 ends won and 24 shots for.

The tournament was sponsored by Ryman Healthcare.

Coming Up — Wednesday, February 5: Beetham Lifestyle Village Single-entry Tournament. Start: 12.30pm.

MAL Trowell skipped Arthur Hawes and Dave Beattie to victory in the club championship men's open triples in hot conditions last Saturday and Sunday.

Runners-up were Bob McIlroy (skip), Charlie Ure and Steve Goldsbury.

Carol Hawes (skip), Dayvinia Mills and Lesley McIntosh were unbeaten in winning the women's open triples.

Queenie Takurua (skip), Adrienne Smiler and Janet Willson were runners-up.

An extra end had to be played before the veteran trio of Dan Barr (skip), Don Oates and Ron Robertson beat first-year players Geoff Pinn (skip) and his eight-year-old twin sons Kyle and Liam to win the junior men's event.

The extra end was required to break the 16-all deadlock that existed after 18 ends.

Only two teams entered the junior women's triples and under the two-life system they had to play each other three times.

Kym Brown (skip), Adrienne Torrie and Karen Pinn emerged as winners of the event, with Barbara Gibson (skip), Angela Gibson-Sam and Diane Oates runners-up.

The Gisborne club recently welcomed members of the Kahutia and Poverty Bay bowling clubs for the Kiri Te Kanawa Retirement Village-sponsored Alex White Shield single-entry tournament.

Players had a lot of fun on a great day for bowls.

Lyn Trueman (skip), Don Oates and Libby Clay — a team from the host club — won the tournament.

Lesley McIntosh (skip), Kym Brown and Liam Pinn were runners-up; Rod McCulloch (skip), Roger Dymock and June Kinder were third; and Queenie Takurua (skip), Tony Dobson and Kyle Pinn were fourth.
