On Saturday, May 14, Kahutia Bowling Club members had their closing day tournament.

The Liquorland-sponsored tournament was played in perfect bowling conditions.

Members played three games of three-bowl triples. Games lasted 10 ends or 75 minutes.

Competition was keen on high-quality greens. Seven teams had two wins, which meant the winners were decided on the number of ends won. It showed how evenly matched the teams were.

The winners — with two wins (four points), 15 ends won and a plus-7 differential — were skipped by Glenys Whiteman, who has over 70 titles to her name. Director was Frank McLoughlin, who manicures the Kahutia greens to perfection, and lead was Chris Gedye of club sponsor Stonehaven Memorial . . . he did well for a first-time bowler.

Runners-up were skip Ngamiro Allen, director Ray Smith, and lead Pat Bayley. This team also had two wins (4pts) but only 14 ends won.

The '60s best-dressed woman was Nona Aston, and the '60s best-dressed man was a toss-up between Noel Dunn and the colourful flower-power hippy Tiki Yates. Dunn — decked out in his denims and leather boots — prevailed.

The lucky team draw went to George Vaotuua, Sheryl Jenkins and promising first-year player Kayaar Wimutu-Muir.

The day was enjoyed by all who took part, and the club finished off the season with a couple of life member awards — to Kevin Bright and Murray Murton — and a few cold refreshments with snacks and pizzas.

Kahutia Bowling Club's Anzac Day Tournament drew players from most of the district's bowling clubs.

Sponsored by McInnes Driver Training Ltd and honouring the service men and women who served their country, the tournament proved popular.

Players took part in a triples competition in which they played three games of 10 ends or 75 minutes. Bowling conditions were magnificent.

The winners — with three wins, 18 ends won, 42 points for and 26 against — were skip Mere Nepia of Te Karaka, director Dianne Philips and lead Neville Wagner.

Runners-up were skip Jock Smith, of Kahutia, director Norma Millar and lead Graham Atkins. They were among the many teams who won two games, but they had the best result for ends won.

Bowlers enjoyed the day and the Kahutia club would like to thank all those who took part.
