Gisborne Bowling Club celebrated the start of a new season on Saturday.

Club president Tim Sherriff called on New Zealand's Greenkeeper of the Year, Jamey Ferris, to send down the first bowl.

Warm spring conditions, perfect greens and the large gathering of players decked out in their club uniforms made for a great start to the bowling season for the Gisborne club.

Spirited play was on show in the opening-day competition — a triples event sponsored by Gear Meat Ltd.

The team of David Beattie (skip), Janice Allan and Roger Dymock played some excellent bowls to win the competition.

Emily Hongara (skip), Gus McCabe and Peter Clay were second.

Ferris not only opened the season for the club, he also skipped his team of Rod McCulloch and Kyle Pinn to third place.

A successful afternoon of bowls was followed by last season's prize-giving. Peter and Libby Clay received the trophies for most improved players.

Peter Clay also won the Eric Trafford Trophy for the winter aggregate, contested since the club came out of lockdown.

A beautiful spring afternoon brought 36 club members out on to the superbly prepared greens at Kahutia Bowling Club on Saturday.

The club's youngest bowler, Paige Richter, who has already had much success, delivered the first bowl of the season.

Ten triples teams each played two 75-minute games.

Club president and newly honoured life member Murray Murton and his wife Pat were the tournament sponsors.

The winning team of Lucy Shanks (skip), Steve Jenkins (director) and Alf Land (lead) had two wins with 12 ends won, 28 shots for and a differential of +17.

Second were Glenys Whiteman (s), Allan Parker (d) and Kingi Stevens (l).

Third were Kevin Bright (s), Tom Riley (d) and Andrew Ball (l).

A lucky draw was also held.

Players and social members were treated to a delicious selection of savouries provided by life member Kevin Bright and his wife Jenny.

On Sunday afternoon, the club held the Sawyer Rose Bowl open optional graded fours, sponsored by Stonehaven Memorials.

The fine weather of the early afternoon turned cold and windy. Two 90-minute games were played.

Only one team managed to come through unbeaten, with team member Tom Riley playing consistent draw bowls all afternoon.

Kevin Bright presented the trophy and prizes on behalf of Stonehaven Memorials.

Winners: Murray Murton (s), Barbara Gibson (3), Tom Riley (2), Diane Murray (l), two wins.

Runners-up: Geoff Pinn (s), Graham Atkins (3), Chris Hewson (2), Andrew Ball (l), one win with 11 ends won.

Third: Lucy Shanks (s), Mo Kapua (3), Allan Parker (2), Pat Murton (l), one win with nine ends won.

Bowls Kahutia would like to congratulate its greenkeeper, Jamey Ferris, on being awarded Bowls New Zealand Summerset Awards 2020 Greenkeeper of the Year. This is a huge achievement, well deserved.

Poverty Bay

Poverty Bay Bowling Club's mixed handicap singles championship was held on Friday and Saturday.

The 32-strong entry was the maximum possible with the club's eight rinks.

Under the format, each player had three games on one day, the winners being the first to get to 21 points. A two-hour time limit applied, and several games were just completed in that time.

Seven players had three wins so differentials were important.

The winning woman was Cheryl Jenkins, with a differential of 30. Otto Louw was the winning man, with a differential of 29.

Trish Leach, with a differential of 24, was the women's runner-up and Dave Hooper, with a differential of 27, was the men's runner-up.

The fairness of the handicapping was illustrated by the number of close games.

On Friday, the first round was particularly competitive. Lex Kennedy (on a handicap of 0) defeated David Holmes (2) 21-19. Trish Leach (5) defeated Lesley Seymour (2) 21-20 in a game that took 24 ends to get a winner. Peter Walters (1) defeated Anna Colvin (10) 21-19. Anna is a promising new player. John Andrews (8), another new player, defeated Peter Walters (1) 21-6 and gave Marilyn Knowles (2) a good game, but eventually lost 21-17.

In the second round, Lesley Seymour (2) defeated Val McGreevy (0) 21-19 in a game watched by many as it went to the full two hours and 24 ends, as did Lesley's first-round game.

In the third round, David Holmes (2) defeated Lesley Seymour (2) 21-20 in another closely fought game, which went to 23 ends.

On Saturday, Ian Carroll (1) defeated Joy Davis (1) 21-20. Davis was six points ahead after nine ends but Carroll caught up and the scores were close for the last nine ends.

In the last game of the championship to be completed, Norma Miller (4) was seriously challenged by Kandyce Bevan (10) and they got to 20-20 before Miller eventually won on the 19th end.

At the end of play, club president Jon Davies awarded trophies to the winners.
