Poverty Bay
Poverty Bay Bowling Club's mixed handicap singles championship was held on Friday and Saturday.
The 32-strong entry was the maximum possible with the club's eight rinks.
Under the format, each player had three games on one day, the winners being the first to get to 21 points. A two-hour time limit applied, and several games were just completed in that time.
Seven players had three wins so differentials were important.
The winning woman was Cheryl Jenkins, with a differential of 30. Otto Louw was the winning man, with a differential of 29.
Trish Leach, with a differential of 24, was the women's runner-up and Dave Hooper, with a differential of 27, was the men's runner-up.
The fairness of the handicapping was illustrated by the number of close games.
On Friday, the first round was particularly competitive. Lex Kennedy (on a handicap of 0) defeated David Holmes (2) 21-19. Trish Leach (5) defeated Lesley Seymour (2) 21-20 in a game that took 24 ends to get a winner. Peter Walters (1) defeated Anna Colvin (10) 21-19. Anna is a promising new player. John Andrews (8), another new player, defeated Peter Walters (1) 21-6 and gave Marilyn Knowles (2) a good game, but eventually lost 21-17.
In the second round, Lesley Seymour (2) defeated Val McGreevy (0) 21-19 in a game watched by many as it went to the full two hours and 24 ends, as did Lesley's first-round game.
In the third round, David Holmes (2) defeated Lesley Seymour (2) 21-20 in another closely fought game, which went to 23 ends.
On Saturday, Ian Carroll (1) defeated Joy Davis (1) 21-20. Davis was six points ahead after nine ends but Carroll caught up and the scores were close for the last nine ends.
