A field of 54 players had a relaxed, enjoyable day. Four games of triples were played, and competition was keen throughout the day.
Winners, with three wins and a draw, were Brian Cairns (s), Don Green and Nona Aston.
Second, with three wins plus 27 points were Carol Hawes as skip, Anne Day and Geoff Willson playing two games each in the two position, and Ngawai Turipa playing lead all day.
Third place went to Judy Taylor (s), Murray Owen and Jenny Evans, with three wins plus 19 points.
Pip Griffin, representing the Kiri Te Kanawa Retirement Village, presented the prizes.
KAHUTIA
The Farm Meats-sponsored optional open graded fours was held on Saturday with 14 teams having to handle the steady rain that fell for most of the day’s play.
With the green playing very well despite the wet conditions, two games were completed in the morning. Play for the day was brought to an end during the first game after lunch, however, when the rain continued.
The winners with three wins, +20, were Kahutia’s Vern Marshall (s), Murray Duncan, and Leighton and Lucy Shanks. Runners-up, also from Kahutia, were Lyn Trueman (s), Bill Campbell, Betty Jackson and Neville Wagner, with three wins, +19.
Two visiting Gisborne Bowling Club teams were also in the prize-money. Gus McCabe (s), Anne Day, Harry Jackson and Eric Craill were third with two wins, +10, and fourth place went to Ronnie Crone (s), Dennis Crone, and Tim and Ginny Sherriff, with two wins, +9.
The club’s midweek aggregate competition for the new season has been going for six weeks, and there is much interest in whether last season’s winner, Murray Murton, can be one of the front-runners again.
This popular Thursday event has 56 players registered for it.
Murton has made another good start, and is co-leader with Charlie Ure on 25 points.
In third place is promising junior Frank McLoughlin on 22, one point ahead of Richard Mann on 21. Jock Smith is fifth on 19, Ray Young has 17, and Alic Brown and Alistair Johnston have 16.
Also in contention, on 15 points, are Harry Green, Alan Williams and Geoff Willson.
POVERTY BAY
The club’s junior men’s and women’s triples championships were contested last weekend over 12 ends with no time limit. The two-life system was used.
Unfortunately, Round 3 games had to be abandoned due to heavy rain flooding the green. These games were resumed on Sunday in near-perfect conditions.
Erin Sutherland (s), Diane Christie and Joy Davis continued playing Ann Richardson (s), Ellen Valentine and Lyn Evans.
The more experienced Sutherland team were too strong for their opponents on this occasion, and went forward to meet Marilyn Knowles (s), Ngawai Turipa and Robyn Arthur, who had received a bye to the potential final.
Team Knowles had lost a life to the Sutherland team in the first round. This second match was evenly balanced until Sutherland scored five shots on End 7. This proved too much of a deficit for Knowles to make up, and the Sutherland trio won the title 13-7.
In the men’s section, two teams, each with two lives, played on Sunday.
Jeff Davis (s), Dave Hooper and John Fricker met Mike Travers (s), Brian Sutherland and Jareth Gaskin.
The Travers team were trailing 11-4 after 10 ends, but scored five shots on the next end. They were unable to sustain this momentum, however, and Team Davis went through to win 12-9.
The potential final between these two teams was a closer, high-scoring game. There was much accurate drawing by leads Fricker and Gaskin.
Although Travers won seven ends, Davis scored three on four ends, and a four, which proved decisive and won his team the victory — and the title — 16-12.
There was much praise for the play of teenager Jareth Gaskin. He played consistently well over the two days and is honing his game to become an accomplished player.
