SLUGGISH surf breaks at Gisborne’s beaches mean boardriders have to work harder to take flight.

In the meantime a screening at the Aotearoa Surf Film Festival promises a set of more vicarious adventures.

The lineup of feature films and documentaries to screen at the Dome Cinema next week comprises Nervous Laughter by Dan Norkunas (United States), Perilous Sea by Mike Bromley (United Kingdom), and Fish People by Keith Malloy (US).

Each screening session in the sixth annual Aotearoa Surf Film Festival’s one-day programme consists of a feature and a selection of films from the ASFF short film competition.

At last year’s festival competition, an invitation was given to key feature filmmakers for submissions to the 2018 selection and an open call was announced for the short film competition.

A panel of surf industry personalities decided the short films official selection for 2018 after working their way through 30 submissions.

The panel selected a mix of New Zealand and international surf films.

The nationwide ASFF 2018 opens at the Dome on Saturday, February 24, with a screening of Perilous Sea at at 6.30pm.
