DARTS

THE Mad on Darts tour comes to Gisborne this weekend, with competition at Brezz’n Darts Club’s base in Derby Street tomorrow and on Sunday.

Mad on Darts was started to introduce new players to the sport, says tour organiser Craig Dunn.

“We have been running for two years and so far this year we have eight events booked, plus a finals night,” he said.

“The support has been overwhelming. We cater for players of all ages and abilities, and regularly see players of a very high standard who are well below 18, some as young as eight.

“This year, as well as providing lots of prizes for all levels of players, we also have a finals night. It will be made up of the top 16 male players plus best female players and best youngsters.

“The major prize we are offering this year — along with prize money at each event — is a trip to try out the PDC Q School (Professional Darts Corporation Qualifying School).”

Dunn said the Mad on Darts team were happy to support Brezz’n Darts Club’s plans for the development of young players.

“We will have some of New Zealand’s top players there this weekend,” Dunn said.

“We’ll have Mark McGrath, PDC and Lakeside TV star; Mark Cleaver, two-time Auckland Masters qualifier; Darren Herewini, one of last year’s Auckland masters stars; and lots of other past and present New Zealand titleholders.

“One of the more recent successes is Gisborne’s Tahuna Irwin, who plays out of Brezz’n Darts Club and is the current New Zealand charter club singles champion.

“We welcome players of all abilities. All the results of the weekend will be live at http://www.dartsnz.co.nz/gisborne-2018.”
