There were a few good sessions to be had this week, with decent banks at Stock Route, Chalet and Makorori.
A right-hander at Makorori’s Creeks has been the pick of the bunch and the most popular spot.
Derek Fryer was out there taking photos yesterday morning and said there were some three-foot sets coming through from the south and about 10 people out.
His book Perspective has sold out, so if you have not already got one, you will have to wait until he decides to print more.
Heat wave alert next week! It is forecast to be 30 degrees-plus on Tuesday. The water is already toasty so if there is a little wave, board shorts will be the go, but keep hydrated and sun-smart.
The best waves will go to the early birds this summer, with sea breezes almost certain to kick in around lunchtime on days with light winds.
Local surfing events have wrapped up for Christmas, but the Pipeline Masters in Hawaii has been going off.
How was that “super heat” yesterday! Kelly Slater, John John Florence and Mick Fanning battling it out in Round 3 for a place in the quarters in eight-to-12-foot Pipe. Such a spectacle.
Kelly’s late drop on the buzzer had me hooting in the office. Fanning claimed the win though, crazy considering his brother died yesterday as well.
Bede Durbridge’s wipeout was beyond gnarly. He grabbed the rail of his board and tried to pull into a huge barrel but went over falls and then slammed into the reef, fracturing his pelvis in two places, both front and back. Drama!
Brazilian Adriano de Souza is the new world champion, after he won the final today. He beat off the challenge of Gabriel Medina, who eliminated Fanning in the semifinals.
