Fans at the North Island All-TerraIn Vehicle Championships were treated to a spectacle of adrenaline-fuelled action at the Whangara track over the weekend.

Tournament organiser and track owner Ian Newman said it was a “great weekend” as the four-wheelers tore up his track at Waiomoko Road.

“Everyone who came to ride enjoyed the track,” he said. “The top riders could clear the big jump. . . . it's not that long but it throws you up quite high.”

Newman, who won the vets' class, said it was exciting to see how the better riders tackled the difficult sections.

Premier division winner and reigning New Zealand champion Cameron Keegan gave it the thumbs up.

It was the first time high-level ATV racers had experienced the track and they had to negotiate some tricky sections more suited to two-wheelers, said Keegan, who has won the national title five consecutive times.

“It was a great event; the track was awesome. . . one of the best I've ridden.”

The premier grade featured “good, hard racing,” as Keegan, Angus Parish and Ross Simpson battled it out across seven races.

Keegan took the checkered flag in five of the races with Parish and Simpson picking up one win each.

Keegan said it took a while to acclimatise to the sweltering conditions

The North Island champs was the last event on the ATV 2020 calendar and Keegan said it was a fantastic finale to the year.

“It was good to see everyone as it's the last event for us for a while.”

The women's division was a family affair, with Stratford's Nicola Reid winning from daughters Dannielle and Ashlee.

Newman thanked Gisborne Motorcycle Sports Club for its support of the event. The club provided flag marshals and helped with track preparation and maintenance.
