POVERTY Bay-East Coast representative Andrew Higham had a hole-in-one on his way to the lowest round by an amateur in the long and proud history of the Poverty Bay golf course yesterday.
Painter-decorator Higham fired 8-under 64 — one better than the previous best score by an amateur off the
Bay’s white tees.
The round is not a course record as the recognised record is from the blue championship tees. That stands at 64, set by Hawke’s Bay professional Pieter Zwart in March 2013 at the Poverty Bay Pro Am.
Higham sank a 9-iron for a career-first ace on the 147-metre par-3 second. He made birdies on the fourth and ninth hole to play the front nine in 4-under 32.
He made further birdies on the 10th, 12th 14th and 16th holes for a matching 32.
