The hockey spotlight falls on the A Grade women’s decider tomorrow from which one team will emerge to challenge defending champions YMP A in next weekend’s grand final . . . and what a match it should be.

GMC Green missed out on the simple route to the final last weekend when they lost 3-2 to YMP.

Tomorrow they must overcome a JNL Paikea line-up who have fought tooth and nail to stay in the play-offs.

“The Green Machine will be pretty determined to get into the premier final with YMP,” said hockey commentator Tony Scragg.

“They have shown good form all year and had beaten YMP twice before last Saturday.

“It was a bump in the road for them but I am confident they will overcome that result,” Scragg said

“On the other hand, I think Paikea will make a really good game of it.

“It the match does not go their way, they will go down fighting for sure.”

The match starts at 1.45pm tomorrow.

The Saturday programme begins with a clash between YMP B and the Lytton Old Boys Masters.

“It’s always a close tussle btween those two teams,” Scragg said.

“From memory, it’s a been a win each way, one for each team, previously this season and never much in it.”

The Masters knocked out YMP B in last year’s semifinal.

“Can the dream continue for them, or will YMP B turn it into a nightmare? It really is too close to call either way.”

The winners will take on Lytton Old Boys NZ Fruits in next weekend’s men’s B grade final.

At 5.15pm tomorrow, Roseland Tavern Te Aowera will meet GMC Gold to decide who joins GMC Kowhai in the women’s B grade final next weekend.

“Recent form in the past month indicates Gold as the favourites,” Scragg said.

“But TA have astonished the competition recently by picking up wins when they were really needed.

“This one could go into extra time.

“Gold will be looking to make it an all GMC women’s B grade final.”

Just the three games will be played in senior hockey tomorrow.
