The Rees family live in Manawatu, but are members of Gisborne Speedway Club. Davies and Vallance also live elsewhere, but are part of the Gisborne club, too.
“James (Kirk) has been going well and we know he will give the team his best,” Rees said.
The Giants got together in Foxton yesterday for final preparations ahead of race day.
“Overall we’re in good shape,” Rees said.
“We’re relaxed and ready to rumble.”
The Giants finished runners-up in the superstock teams event in Palmerston North last season, and then won the other national event at Waikaraka Park in Auckland.
Kirk said he was not feeling nervous about making his national teams debut.
“I’ve done a teams race with the Giants this season. That was down in Christchurch, where we got second, and I’ve raced individually at seven meetings.
“I feel I have been progressing each time.”
Kirk said he was happy with his car and how he had been handling it.
Tonight’s event has attracted 13 teams from around New Zealand.
“There’s been a change this year in how the finalists are decided,” Rees said.
“A points system has been introduced, so that will mean a different approach.
“We will be racing every other team for top points to make the final tomorrow night.”
The Giants have drawn the Wellington Wild Cats first up tonight, and Rees expects they will be a better Wellington team than they have faced before.
“It’ll be a hard one, that’s for sure.”
Their second match tonight will be against the Palmerston North B team, the Mustangs.
