A DREAM holiday could become reality for a lucky golfer at the Emerre & Hathaway Insurance Brokers Poverty Bay Men’s Open in September.

The open, which dates back to 1931, is at the Poverty Bay course from September 26 to 28.

The first player to have a hole-in-one on the 154-metre par-3 second hole during the second round of qualifying on day 1 will receive $25,000 in travel vouchers courtesy of World Travellers - Elliott Travel Gisborne.

Entries are being taken for the three-day tournament. It is limited to the first 112 paid entries.

Pete Anderson is the reigning PB Open champion, beating Kawerau’s Ruel Pedersen 3 and 1 in the first 16 final last year.

Players have the choice of 54-or 27 holes over the two days of the women’s open, which includes a mystery prize.

Tolaga BayTHE Poverty Bay Open title is next on Hukanui Brown’s list after his comeback win over Anuresh Chandra at the King of the Coast men’s open.

Patutahi member Brown came from dormie-3-down to beat Gisborne Park’s Chandra on the 21st hole of the championship 16 on Sunday.

It was his first “major” title, having previously made the East Coast Open final and semifinals of the PB Open, which is the next big tournament (September).

In other section finals at the KoTC, Mahia’s Wade Wesche won the Cook Handicap second 16, former Gisborne man Tim Trowell, now at Whakatane, won the Uawa Handicap third 16 and Tahunga’s Ben Johnson the Hauiti Handicap fourth 16.

Johnson and clubmate Mark Steele went all the way to Tolaga Bay together, and stayed at the same place only to end up meeting each other in the final.

More on Brown’s win in tomorrow’s Herald.

Poverty BayA NEAR-hole-in-one and a trophy have been the talking points in the Bramwell household this week.

Sharon Bramwell has only been playing serious golf for a couple of seasons but nearly crossed ace off her list during the Duncombe Salver women’s 36-hole four-ball best-ball net competition over the weekend.

Bramwell left her tee shot on the par-3 11th a handful of inches from the hole.

She followed that near-thing with silverware success in the 27-hole tournament yesterday.

Bramwell won the Meg Harper Salver bronze division gross with a 147 total.

Gay Young added to her impressive title collection in winning the AB&J Cup silver division gross with 129.

Viv Bell (106) won the silver division net and Vonnie Fletcher (109) the bronze division net.

Stableford honours went to Anne Witters (silver, 51 points) and Kirsty Shaw (bronze, 55).

Maxine Francois was in top form as she and Sally Spence won the Duncombe Salver title on Sunday.

The pair combined for a 36-hole best-ball net of 59, Francois’s 90-22-68 on Saturday setting them up nicely.

They finished three strokes ahead of Marg Colebourne and Vicki Fraser.

Warwick Thompson first, Don Wright second. The two best rounds of the week came in the same competition on Saturday. Thompson shot 86-21-65, for 43 points, to win the division two men’s stableford on countback from Wright’s 81-16-65.

Paul Rickard copped heaps from his Sunday School cohorts last weekend after his worst round of the century. Rick lost six balls — including two in consecutive shots — as he staggered to 101-13-88 for a miserable 20 stableford points.

“Did you only play nine holes,” one comedian asked him.

But it wasn’t just his first 100-plus performance since the new handicap system came into force in 2000. It was the fact that good mate Les Gunther, on a 31-handicap, beat him off the stick.

Being the only player in the district on a +1-handicap has tested the ability of Anaru Reedy, especially on the easiest hole on the course. Reedy has to make birdie on the par-3 18th-stroke sixth hole to get two points. He’s managed it three times in his eight rounds to last Sunday, parred it for just one point four times and made bogey for no points once.

Following the success of the club’s recent quiz night, “Quiz Night II: The Sequel” is to be held on Friday, August 30, from 6pm. It is teams of six and includes dinner and great prizes. To register your team (including team name), email johnvanhelden1304@gmail.com
