A truck rollover on the top of Traffords Hill on State Highway 2 on Tuesday afternoon caused what was described as a “huge” build up of traffic heading in both directions.

The crash happened at around 2pm and the highway was finally reopened to traffic both ways at around 8pm.

An emergency services spokesman said the semi-trailer was carrying an empty bitumen container and was on its way to Gisborne.

“The driver was checked over by a St John ambulance crew at the scene, but he was OK.

“His truck flipped over on to its side right at the top of Traffords, completely blocking the road.”

Gisborne Hiabs were called to the scene to clear the damaged truck off the road.

They then towed the rig back to Gisborne.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency has thanked road users for their patience as the emergency services work to clear the crash site.
