Three shot in Elgin

Three females, one of them aged 12, were seriously injured in a shooting incident in Totara Street, Elgin, last night.

It happened at around 11pm.

Police attended after reports of a firearm being discharged in that street.

“Three females aged between 12 and 22, were seriously injured and were taken to Gisborne Hospital,” said Inspector Darren Paki.

“Inquiries are ongoing but we can confirm that gang members are involved.

“We are seriously concerned with the continued targeting of women and children by gang members,” he said.

“All of our shootings in the Gisborne community this year have resulted in the (alleged) murder or serious maiming of women or children by gang members.

“Violence toward women in any form is not acceptable.”

Insp Paki said police had established highly visible and armed patrols to deter ongoing gang tensions.

The three females were all admitted to hospital and all were reported to be in a stable condition.
