The fundraising efforts of more than 240 people who took part in the Taupo Half Marathon earlier this month raised around $8500 for the local Hear4U organisation.

They joined more than 2000 competitors for the annual event, which includes a marathon, half marathon, 10km and 5km course and a  short “kids dash” for the youngsters.

Hear4U manager Krissy Mackintosh said 80 percent of the 240 participants were from Tairāwhiti.

The rest came from around the country, and even Australia.

“Sponsorship and donations enabled us to achieve this project and we greatly appreciate the support,” she said.

“It’s almost six months since Cyclone Gabrielle and our team has remained highly dedicated to promoting suicide prevention throughout our region, and New Zealand,” Ms Mackintosh said.

The organisation also focuses on men’s mental health awareness and  community wellness,

“The only way we are going to progress forward and recover from the destruction due to constant weather challenges is through providing healing pathways, and wellbeing initiatives.

“Annually, our charity brings a huge contingent to the Taupo Marathon, and it is always a successful and inspiring event.

“Taking a break off the farm, away from the office and life stressors gives individuals the opportunity to reconnect, rest, and reflect on how to improve their lives, and support systems.

“It will take years for this region to recover, but it doesn’t mean we should all burn out doing so,” she said.

“Strong households encourage strong workforces. We feel it is important to enrich and support those doing all they can for Tairāwhiti.

“Throughout our mahi, it is evident that physical exercise, community connection, and celebration are factors which contribute towards the overall wellbeing of our clients, and their whānau.
