The region’s best grape vine pruners were put through their paces in the annual Gisborne Silver Secateurs Awards at the Ashwood Estate property at the Makaraka racecourse on Monday.

It was rescheduled to that day because of the heavy rain on Friday.

Around 50 pruners from a dozen vineyards in the region took part in a competition organised by LeaderBrand’s viticulture manager Kyle Mason.

The judges looked for quality of work, cane selection and speed, using the Sauvignon Blanc vines at Ashwood Estate.

Results from the competition will be published when they become available.
